Raising Kids in the Quiet Corner

By Chelsea Baum, Quiet Corner CT, Macaroni Kid Publisher November 21, 2019

Maybe it was the summer afternoon that we rode our bikes through four towns before our moms realized we were gone. Maybe it was the memory of fresh peach ice-cream after the end of camp. It could have been the lazy days in parks and hiking trails. Or maybe those small-town shoppes with bells on the door and two scoops of cookies n' cream. What was the appeal of the quiet corner for you? Did you grow up here  and never left? Maybe you went elsewhere for several years only to find yourself back in the place where roads are named after the families who live there and your neighbors cows get loose. Perhaps you found the quiet corner of Connecticut on your own, seized the day, and set down roots. No doubt you were welcomed with open arms. Small towns hold big appeal for young families. The open space seems ideal for young kids. Reasonable real-estate means there's enough room for everyone and likely a yard, too. This week I talked to Jenn Nemeth who owns The Ice Box in Brooklyn, CT. When I was very little, The Ice Box was a REAL treat. Popping out for a scoop was a very special occasion. I can remember the excitement and scent in the air when we'd visit. I'd barely reach the counter to whisper out my order but I felt very entitled and very lucky to do so! I'd hold my cone like a crowned jewel. Check out our Quiet Corner Mamas interview with Jenn this week and be sure to pop over there soon. Of course it's not too cold for ice-cream!

The area calendar is starting to fill up with holiday events like photos with Santa and church bazaars that are sure to remind you exactly why you wanted to live in this special little corner of the state.

Thank you and welcome to all the new subscribers here. I'm so glad to have you! p.s. Do you know The Ice Box uses sustainable non-plastic packaging called Vegware? Pretty cool. Any caloric guilt will instantly be outweighed by this eco-friendly choice!
