Glowing Up! Part 3: 6 Tips for a Smooth Shopping Experience

Helping your tweens and teens Navigate proper Behavior in Beauty Stores

As a mom to teens, I’ve been following the stories about tweens and teens obsessing over high-end beauty products. The viral reels and videos showcase some children as young as eight, and their desire to have flawless skin is not unusual, given that their social media consumption is spent watching videos of influencers showcasing their skincare routine. To feel included, they, too, want to emulate that behavior. Sometimes, they’re on camera showcasing their knowledge of Drunk Elephant, Glow Recipe, and Bubble Skincare products.

I’ve been reading about how tweens and teens are disruptive and causing trouble in beauty stores like Sephora. However, my observations of these young kids browsing through the aisle of the Sephora mini store in Kohl’s and Ulta is that most of the younger girls are with a parent and are browsing, while older teens are with a couple of friends. I did not witness any disruptive behavior.

To ensure your kids are behaving properly while at these stores, you can implement these rules:

  1. Set Clear Expectations: Discuss appropriate behavior with your kids before entering the store. Remind them to respect other shoppers and employees and handle products with care.
  2. Establish Boundaries: Let your kids know which areas of the store they are allowed to explore and where they should not go. This helps prevent any accidental disruptions or mishaps.
  3. Lead by Example: Children often mimic the behavior of adults, so make sure you are modeling good behavior while shopping. Stay calm and patient, and avoid confrontations with store staff or customers.
  4. Engage Them Productively: Instead of letting them roam freely, engage your kids in the shopping experience. Ask for their opinions on products or involve them in selecting items. This keeps them occupied and less likely to cause trouble.
  5. Teach Respect for Property: Reinforce the importance of respecting store property by reminding your kids not to open or tamper with products unless they intend to purchase them. Encourage them to ask for assistance if they need help with anything.
  6. Set Time Limits: If you notice your kids getting restless or bored, it may be time to wrap up the shopping trip. Setting time limits can help prevent frustration and minimize the chances of disruptive behavior.

By implementing these strategies, you can help ensure that your kids behave while shopping and contribute to a positive experience for everyone involved.
